I’m going for a run

A nice, long, run.

I’m going to listen to the Lana Del Rey album whilst I’m running. Let’s see how that works for me… It’s hardly running music.

Running is draining me of all my energy

I wake up in the morning and run. I eat after I run but I’m trying to watch what I eat so by the time it gets to the evening I just want to sleep.

I don’t mind, though. I stood on the scales this morning and the needle moved in the other direction for the first time in weeks. That makes it all worth it.

On top of that, my legs have reached that point where they’re aching and my muscles are tight. I LOVE this feeling. I went through a period where my muscled ached everyday for years. I don’t know how to explain it but it’s the best feeling. It’s exhilarating.

Running is one of my favourite things in the world. I think I’ll be running to the point of exhaustion these next few days and weeks. I need to get good at running again. I need to reach my best ever levels. To get there, it’ll cost me blood, sweat, and tears.

Running with Waq
Waq: Come one... just 500m more
House mate: I hate you
Waq: You can do it. Just keep going.
House mate: I fucking hate you. Shut up.
Waq: We're nearly there. Stronger. Faster.
House mate: You sadist bastard.
House mate: *makes it to the end of the run*
House mate: Awwwwww yyyyeeeeaaaahhhhhh

Oh my God, I’m so tired

My housemate ran his first mile! He was amazing tonight.

Instead of covering the normal 12km/7.5miles we actually ended up covering 14.5km/9miles.

He hated me at the time but he thanked me when he got home. We’re really loving this running/walking thing. He’s improving every single time we go out and he’s pushing himself so hard to get fantastic results.

A week ago he wouldn’t run a step. Today he ran a mile. I aim to have him running all 12km within a month! Let’s see if we manage…

We ended the session by getting a delicious salad at Subway!

My house mate and I have started an exercise program

It’s pretty simple really. Everyday, after isha, we go to this place, not too far from where we live, at Prince Sultan University and walk laps of the university. Each lap is measured at 4km so we knows exactly what it is we’re getting.

We started walking on Friday evening and since then we’ve kind of got the buzz for it. It takes us around 2 hours to walk 12km/7.5m and it’s really good fun. Neither of us take our phones or any form of electronic equipment with us and we just use the time to talk and ponder things. Today we were discussing the point at which societal evolution becomes mandatory for survival when facing catastrophic disaster.

After walking yesterday, my house mate turned to me and said “I think this is the first time I’ve talked to someone for two and a half hours straight and not gotten bored for even a minute”. I took it as a great compliment.

Today one of our friends came along and we also changed the walking routine. For each 800m we walked we ran 200m. My house mate, if any of you remember, is one of the ‘laziest’ people I know. He’s… extremely adverse to any kind of physical activity but he managed the run periods very well. I was really impressed. At the end he actually ran 700/800m none stop. I told him that I’ll have him running all 12km by the time I head back home in 6 weeks time and I stick with that belief firmly after watching him today. We’re going to walk 6 days a week.

It should be fun!

I’ve been complaining a lot recently…

about how unfit I am, about how sluggish I’ve become, and about how I’m no where near as fit and healthy I used to be. Part of this I blame on not going to the gym any more or working out in any way and it’s partly due to my terrible diet.

Sure, I’m as light as I’ve ever been in my adult life but I’m no where near as fit as I was 3/4 years ago. I’m planning on changing that.

One of my friends updated her facebook with a fitness programme she’s been using for the last 60 days and she finished it today. Her workouts looked totally intense so I asked her what it was and she gave me the details for it. I’m downloading the torrents right now and will get started on it in the morning.

I have 62 days before I’m home. 60 days on this programme should have be at a pretty amazing level by the time I get home.

Expect a whole load of updates over the next couple of months telling you how it’s killing me but is the most amazing thing ever…

Check out the infomercial… It makes you sweat just watching the video.

The name of the program… INSANITY!

Do you ever get that feeling where you want to destroy something beautiful?

Fight Club is one of my favourite movies. I’ve seen it so many times I can’t even count. There’s this one scene where The Narrator - Edward Norton’s character - is fight against Angel Face - Jared Leto’s character. Anyway, before this scene The Narrator has been growing frustrated with Tyler Durden - Brad Pitt’s Character - and vents by totally smashing in Angel Face’s face in the ground over and over. When he finally stops there’s a pattern of a butterfly left behind. Tyler asks him where he went and he replies by saying ‘(he) felt like destroying something beautiful’.

I’m in pain!

My run from last night hurt. My legs are tight and my back hurts but I totally love that feeling. I’ve missed that feeling. It’s a feeling I knew so well. There was a time when I felt that everyday. When I would feel strange if I wasn’t experiencing some kind of pain, especially in the lower half of my body and I kind of crave that right now.

Running

I love running. Just because I don’t run as often as I used to doesn’t mean that I don’t enjoy the act of running. I’m a runner at heart. I think I always will be. Saying that, since I’ve come to Saudi Arabia running has certainly taken a back-seat form my daily routine. So much so that it’s almost vanished. Well, today I took a first step towards it coming back and all those feelings associated with running have come flooding back too. The best thing about today’s run was that it gave me some much needed time to think.

That exercise program I started and my diet…

These last few weeks have been really ify for my exercise regime and my diet. I’ve been slacking on both fronts and the results are starting to show. I know exactly why it’s happened and I know how to fix it. It’s just I have more motivation with one of the two than the other.

Four months in Saudi…

I can’t believe it’s been four months already. On some days I feel like it’s gone by in the blink of an eye, like today, and on other days it feels like I’ve been here for a lifetime (when I’m missing my family). This last month has been really weird and wonderful in a few ways that I’ll share with you now…

My new fitness regime…

I’ve been threatening it for a while but I’ve been too lazy. I know my diet is pretty much perfect right now and I’m really happy with my weight loss but the time has come to make sure that I’m not just skinny but toned. I need to build some muscle. The problem is that I’m too lazy to go to the gym if I don’t have anyone to go with and I’m very good at making excuses. To that end I’ve been looking online and I’ve found a pretty good system that I can use…
