What have you fought for?

Have you ever fought for anything in your life? Have you ever been faced with anything bigger than yourself; when you knew that you had to fight to survive; when you knew that you had no option but to resist?

I’ve been thinking about the Arab Spring a lot today - especially Egypt - and how so many millions of people literally put their lives on the line to go out in to the world and fight.

I’ve never fought like they have. I’ve never put my whole life on the line like those brave revolutionaries. I’ve never struggled for something bigger than myself. My battles have been personal. My battles have been against myself. Some of them I’ve won and others I’ve lost. I’ve fought in a different way. Today isn’t about me, though. Today is about those people who put everything on the line.

Those people who are in the world striving to make it better are in my prayers tonight. Those people who put everything on the line to better themselves, their families, their communities, their towns, their countries, and their world are in my thoughts tonight.

Keep fighting the good fight. May Allah help you succeed.

The atmosphere on the streets is amazing. People aren’t motivated by hate. They’re not motivate by destruction. They just want what is best for themselves and their brothers. It is a movement founded in love.
In Alexandria the police surrendered to the protesters and were given water and food.
May Allah help Egypt, North Africa, and the Middle East.

Reblogging today because it’s the anniversary of the uprising in Egypt.
The Egyptian people have come so far but they still have so much further to go. Here’s hoping peace comes to the Egyptians as soon as possible as well as to other Arab states where the people are going through strife. May Allah help them.

I’ve been really nostalgic today

It’s partly because a bunch of people started to reblog a photo I uploaded around this time last year. I realised it was because it’s the first anniversary of the Egyptian uprising. The picture I posted on 28th of Jan last year got over 1000 notes. I’ll reblog it after I finish writing this post.

Anyway… it got me thinking about all these other things that were happening around this time last year, all the thoughts that were going through my, everything that I was feeling and experiencing.

It’s amazing how much of a difference a year makes. It’s amazing when you consider it from a global perspective but also from a personal perspective.

This post is totally pointless. I don’t even know what I’m saying, if anything.

One thing I’d love to do this year…

I was talking to a friend who’s in England a couple of days ago about going on holiday somewhere this summer and I suggested a North African country. I’ve been talking to my house mate about it since and we were bouncing around ideas and we had this really great one about North Africa.

We thought we could land in Morocco and buy/rent/steal motorbikes. On the motorbikes we could head east towards Egypt but go on the bikes through Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and then to Egypt. We talked about hugging the Mediterranean Sea along the way and heading inland to see some of the big cities along the way. We could start in Marakesh and end up in Cairo.

It’ll be a modern version of the first part of the journey Ibn Battuta took when he set off on his great exploration of the world. I think the trip would take us around 2-3 weeks and it shouldn’t really cost all that much - maybe about £2000/$3000.

I think we’ll see if it’s possible to work out logistics over the next few months and then see if it’s feasible to actually book it.

It has the potential of being pretty spectacular. Wish me luck.

This revolution is being televised!

Al-Jazeera are showing the Egyptian people getting together to go on a ‘million man march’. People are slowly tickling in to walk from the main square to the Presidential Palace.

The Egyptian people are united, they’re determined, and they’re full of love for their brothers and their country. It’s for that reason they can’t go on like they have.

It looks like it’ll all be over soon! I can’t wait!

New Followers!!!

The picture I posted the other day got the most amazing response I’ve ever had to anything on Tumblr and I’m really glad it was such a powerful image of solidarity and love.

I’ve had a whole load of people visit the blog, because of the response, and I just want to welcome them. To my new followers, please, ask me anything. Get in touch! It’ll be great to hear from you.

Police cars on fire in Alexandria… (via Peter Bouckaert)
The police abandoned their cars and left them behind and the protesters burnt them. There is such powerful imagery coming out of Egypt right now. There’s a real passion burning through the people in North Africa and the Middle East and governments are getting nervous.
It’s amazing how there isn’t violence breaking out yet. I hope innocent people aren’t harmed.

Okay… so New York in August might not happen…

A few weeks ago I wrote on this blog about going to New York in August for a five day shopping extravaganza trip and blowing a whole big sum of money on a nice collection of gadgets and toys.

I’m thinking that the trip might not work out now…

Things to see and do in… RIYADH!!!

So, for those of you who don’t know already I’ve been offered a job in Riyadh at the King Saud University and could be starting within the next couple of weeks (depending on paperwork). That means I’ve been researching living and working out there over the last couple of days and it looks like I’m in store for something pretty interesting.
