I’ve been sat at my computer for the last two hours thinking about life, the universe, and everything and how we present ourselves to new people. I’ve been thinking about how we show some parts of ourselves whilst keeping others hidden away.
I’m a very open person, like I keep saying on this blog, and I’m very forthright in how I present myself but I think we all check and censor ourselves in some ways when we talk to new people. I don’t feel I have all that much to hide about myself but the early impressions we create are so important.
I’ve been working on the nature of first impressions with my students and we’ve had some fascinating debates about it in class. Some of the students think they’re crucial and others think they’re pointless because we’re so often wrong with our first impressions.
Anyway, I think it’s something I’ll be thinking about a lot over the next few days. Time to try to sleep now.
How important are first impressions? Do you present a version of yourself that you check and censor when talking to a new person?
